Events
- October - Warner Communications' Atari releases the Atari 2600 home console (originally named Video Computer System)
- Market saturation of PONG clones causes sharp drop in demand and prices for the machines.
- Bally/Midway releases the Bally Home Library Computer home console
- Nintendo Co. Ltd. releases the Color TV Game 4 home console and the Color TV Game 6 home console
- Namco renamed from Nakamura Manufacturing Ltd.
- Zork written on a DEC PDP-10 computer by Tim Anderson, Marc Blank, Bruce Daniels, and Dave Lebling. They would later found Infocom to sell the game for home computers.
- Kelton Flinn begins work on Air at the University of Virginia with John Taylor. They would later found Kesmai to offer online games for home computers. Air is a text-based air combat game that foreshadows the arrival in 1987 of the first-ever MMOG, Air Warrior, designed by Flinn and Taylor and developed by Kesmai.
