A Room with a View is a novel by E. M. Forster that tells the story of a young Englishwoman whose encounter with a handsome young man in Florence may interfere with her marriage plans.
Trivia
Towards the end, Forster's characters quote some unidentified stanzas ("Come down, O maid, from yonder mountain height", etc.). They are from Tennyson's long narrative poem "The Princess".
Film adaptation
A Room with a View was adapted by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala in 1986 and directed by James Ivory. The film stars Maggie Smith (as Charlotte Bartlett), Helena Bonham Carter (as Lucy Honeychurch), Denholm Elliott (as Mr. Emerson), Julian Sands (as George Emerson), Simon Callow (as Mr. Beebe), Judi Dench (as Eleanor Lavish) and Daniel Day-Lewis (as Cecil Vyse).
The film won three Academy Awards: Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. It was also nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Denholm Elliott), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Maggie Smith), Best Cinematography, Best Director and Best Picture.
