Actor (disambiguation)
The word actor can mean:
- An actor is a person who plays a role in theater or cinema.
- In sociology, actor-network theory is a general theory of sociological behaviour that concerns actors as autonomous, communicating entities. Actors in this theory are also called actants.
- In computing and AI there are three usages:
- In requirements analysis and especially in the context of the Unified Modeling Language, the concept of an actor is used to describe who does what with the computer system to be designed;
- In AI, the above-mentioned actor-network theory from sociology has been applied, and has influenced the design of the scheme programming languages.
- In concurrency is refers to a model of concurrent computation. See Actors (concurrency).
- In Greek mythology, Actor was the father of Menoetius and Astyoche. He was king of Opus in Locris.
- In Policy Debate, an actor is the entity that enacts a certain policy action.
