The Blue Mage is a character class (or "job") featured in Square Enix's Final Fantasy series of computer role-playing games.
The Blue Mage is a practioner of blue magic, a specialized school of magic which replicates the special attacks of various monsters, usually through observation: in most games, the only way to learn blue magic spells is to survive being targetted by them. However, this is not always the case: Quistis Trepe from Final Fantasy VIII learned blue magic techniques by using items dropped by defeated monsters, and Quina from Final Fantasy IX had a special command that allowed him/her to swallow enemies whole, learning whatever blue magic techniques they might possess in the process. Blue Mages fluctuate in usefulness depending on how frequently they are used; generally a blue mage is very weak if not developed correctly, and very powerful if taught the correct techniques. The Blue Mage has appeared in the following games in the Final Fantasy series:
- Final Fantasy V
- Final Fantasy X-2 (as Gun Mage)
- Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
- Final Fantasy XI (appearance in the next expansion "Treasures of Aht Urhgan" has recently been confirmed by Square Enix)
In addition, the characters Strago Magus (Final Fantasy VI), Quistis Trepe (Final Fantasy VIII), Quina (Final Fantasy IX), and Kimahri Ronso (Final Fantasy X) all use blue magic, although not every one of is explicitly described as "blue mages" in their respective games. While there is no dedicated Blue Mage in Final Fantasy VII, the Enemy Skills materia grants the ability to use blue magic.
