Sardar Buta Singh (born 1934) is the present governor of Bihar state, India. He took office on November 5 2004. He became controversial after dissolving the Bihar state assembaly in 2005. He was the home minister of India during the early 1990s. He is a Sikh and was elected to the Indian Parliament in 1967.

Charging Bihar Governor Buta Singh with "manipulating" the administration at the behest of RJD chief Lalu Prasad for "partisan political ends", top NDA leaders today met President A P J Abdul Kalam and demanded his immediate recall.

Agitated over the recent transfer of 17 senior IPS officers, the leaders including NDA convenor George Fernandes and Leader of Opposition L K Advani, alleged that the "Constitution, Rules of Executive Business and norms are being flouted with impunity".

Causing a major embarrassment to Bihar Governor Buta Singh, Chief Secretary G S Kang today went on indefinite leave and returned his official vehicles, cellular and landline phones, apparently to protest against the Governor's action in posting some 'tainted' IPS officers at key posts and transfer of Siwan SP Ratn Sanjay.

Seventeen IPS officers, including Siwan police superintendent Ratn Sanjay, who was at loggerheads with the fugitive RJD MP, Mohammed Shahabuddin, were yesterday transferred in a major shake-up in the police establishment.

Some of the officers, who were given bright posting by the Governor, were said to have poor track record and a few of them were also being described as tainted and had incurred the wrath of the Election Commission during the February Assembly poll in Bihar.

Senior JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar alleged "Bright and upright officers are shunted out who have taken courageous and bold steps in instilling fairness in administration and restoring law and order", it said and cited the transfer of Siwan SP Ratn Sanjay "who took stringent action against leading criminal elements close to the RJD and ensured the fairest polls in Siwan in last 15 years".
