Călin Constantin Anton Popescu-Tăriceanu (approximately cuh-leen const-aan-teen anth-on pop-ess-koo tuh-rich-ah-noo), (born 14 January 1952), is the Prime minister of Romania from December 28 2004.

He is currently the president of the National Liberal Party and a vice-president of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party. He is a graduate of the Technical Institute for Construction in Bucharest and has a Master's Degree in Mathematics and Informatics. Between 1996 and 1997 he served as Minister of Industries and Commerce in Victor Ciorbea's government. Between 1996 and 2004 he was a Romanian MP, in the Chamber of Deputies, representing Bucharest. Between 2000 and 2004 he was Vice-president of the National Liberal Party group in the Romanian Parliament and vice president of the Commission for Budget, Finances and Insurances in the Chamber of Deputies. (source Romania-on-line.net whoswho list). He was elected as a vice-president of the ELDR Party in 2004.

During the 2004 election, he was proposed to be the Prime Minister of Romania in an eventual government of the Justice and Truth alliance. That government has already been formed on the 30th of december. His government was elected with 265 for and 200 against.

His Cabinet announced its resignation on July 7, 2005 in order to make early elections possible. The resignation was prompted by the Constitutional Court's decision to block a set of laws for the reformation of the judicial system. President Traian Băsescu had been pushing for early elections since his victory in the 2004 elections, in order to secure a more comfortable majority for the Justice and Truth alliance, but his efforts had been met with resistance by Prime Minister and alliance partner Popescu-Tăriceanu. As of July 19, Popescu-Tăriceanu withdrew his resignation, citing the severe flooding (for example Comanesti floodings ) Floodings killed 66 people in Romania from begining of the year, leaving thousands homeless. In September 2005, it was revealed that Tăriceanu bought on 9 April 2004 10 million shares of the Rompetrol company based on insider information and were sold later that year, after he became Prime Minister. Back then, he was a member of the Rompetrol Downstream's board of directors.
