The English word ditch can be used a variety of ways.

A ditch is usually defined as a small to moderate depression created to channel water. A ditch can be used for drainage, to drain water from low lying areas, alongside roadways or fields, or to channel water from a more distant source for plant irrigation. A trench can be defined as a long narrow ditch.

With or without water, a ditch can be used as a barrier, as an alternative for a fence.

A secondary usage, "to ditch," means to leave or abandon someone when you were supposedly accompanying them.
