Notable events
This will be the last season for Arsenal at their longtime home of Highbury. The Gunners will open the 60,000-seat Emirates Stadium in 2006.
In the season's first match, Everton hosted Manchester United, losing 0-2 to United. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored the season's first goal.
Chelsea are celebrating their centennial year with a series of events.
Several clubs reported disappointing attendances and/or trouble selling out their grounds for the opening weeks' matches. In response, Football Supporters Association chairman Malcolm Clarke blamed high ticket prices and a statement from Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon that "the winner of the title will come from a small bunch of one".
Current Status
On 22nd October, 2nd played 3rd as Tottenham travelled to Old Trafford to play injury hit Manchester United. United took an early lead through Mikael Silvestre following a blunder by Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson, but Jermaine Jenas equalised 20 minutes from time with a curling free kick. Both sides missed chances to win the match, with Ronaldo heading wide for the hosts and Michael Carrick crashing another free kick against the Manchester United crossbar.
Although Tottenham retained their place in the table, Man Utd fell to 4th behind Wigan Athletic, who continue to stun the Premiership. They won 2-0 away at Aston Villa, following an Aaron Hughes own goal and a stunner from Alan Mahon.
Arsenal rose to 6th with a 1-0 win over Manchester City, with Robert Pires scoring from the penalty spot, whilst also missing a bizzarre second penalty in which he attempted to pass the ball to Thierry Henry.
Collins John and Luis Boa Morte were both on target for Fulham to beat Liverpool, whilst Paul Dickov and Craig Bellamy were both on target for Blackburn against Birmingham.
In the evening kick off, Charlton came from behind to beat Portsmouth 2-1.
