Kananaskis is an improvement district situated about 80 km west of Calgary, Alberta in the foothills and front ranges of the Canadian Rockies.
There are many recreational activities in this area, including camping, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, scrambling, climbing (trad climbing alpine climbing sport climbing) and backpacking.
There is some development in the park, especially in one of the regions of Kananaskis country, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. Development in Kananaskis includes several campgrounds, a golf course, some hotels, two ski resorts (including Nakiska which was originally built to host Alpine skiing and freestyle moguls skiing during the 1988 Winter Olympics), a holiday ranch, two gas stations and a village near the Kananaskis Lakes.
The Eastern border of the park abuts the Stoney Indian reservation. Past the Western border is Canmore before reaching Banff National Park.
In June 2002, the area was the host of the 28th G8 summit.
