Midgar (ミッドガル): The main city of the world, where both Shin-Ra and AVALANCHE are based. Aeris and Marlene were raised here. The player begins in Midgar and returns later to confront Shin-Ra. The Sister Ray is moved here on Disc 2.

Sector 7 Slums (七番街スラム): The home of most of the people in Midgar. It sits under the seventh Mako reactor in Midgar. Tifa's 7th Heaven bar, a front for AVALANCHE's base, is also here. It is destroyed early in the game when the pillar holding up the section of the Midgar plate directly above the slum is demolished.

Wall Market (ウォールマーケット): A black market area where Don Corneo's mansion and the Honey Bee Inn are located. A graffiti-covered wall near the mansion provides access to a secret route into Shin-Ra Headquarters, the only way for non-employees to reach the building.

Shin-Ra Headquarters (神羅ビル): A 70-story building that houses the different divisions of Shin-Ra, including their weapons research labs.

Kalm (カーム): A town near Midgar where Cloud tells the party about his background with Sephiroth. Later in the game, the Kalm Traveller will exchange valuable items for three very rare treasures.

Chocobo Farm (チョコボファーム): A farm that sells Chocobo Lure Materia and greens, both of which are necessary to catch a Chocobo. Later, the farm can be used to breed Chocobos.

Mythril Mine (ミスリルマイン): An abandoned mine blocked by a swamp inhabited by Midgar Zoloms. Here, Cloud and his group learn that Sephiroth is headed for Junon Harbor.

Fort Condor (コンドルフォート): A military fortress dedicated to resistance against Shin-Ra. It is named for the massive breed of condor that makes its home there. Shin-Ra attacks the fort several times in order to get the Huge Materia inside the derelict Mako Reactor atop the fortress.

Junon (ジュノン): A heavily-armed Shin-Ra military base built upon a plate above a small fishing town of the same name, now called Lower Junon. The base, known as Upper Junon, includes troop garrisons in barracks, an airport, a seaport, and several shops and bars, mostly supported by the Shin-Ra troops. The Sister Ray Cannon is used here to kill Sapphire WEAPON1 before it reaches the city.

Underwater Reactor (海底魔晄炉): The primary Mako reactor for the city of Junon. A Huge Materia is removed and transported by submarine from here.

Costa del Sol (コスタ・デル・ソル): A coastal resort town that also serves as the main port on the western continent. The player can purchase President Shinra's summer cottage here, for a hefty sum.

Corel (コレル): Barret's hometown. Barret feels responsible for its destruction since he strongly supported building a Mako Reactor for the town. Shin-Ra troops razed the village after an alleged terrorist attack on the reactor facility. Subsequently, Corel became the Desert Prison, and the Gold Saucer was built above it.

Cosmo Canyon (コスモキャニオン): Red XIII's birth place, also called the Valley of the Fallen Star. It is a pilgrimage site for those who wish to pursue the study of planet life. Bugenhagen's observatory is here.

North Corel (北コレル): The town settled by the survivors of Shin-Ra's assault on Corel. If the player fails to stop a speeding train carrying a Huge Materia, the town may be destroyed.

Gold Saucer (ゴールドソーサー): A towering amusement park, built on Corel's ruins, operated by Shin-Ra. Cait Sith joins the party here.

Gongaga (ゴンガガ): A small, desolate village ravaged by a Mako reactor explosion. Aerith's ex-boyfriend, the SOLDIER Zack, grew up here, and his parents still await his return, unaware of his fate. The name "Gongaga" bears a strong resemblance to Ginnungagap, another place in Norse Mythology between Niflheim and Muspelheim (Niflheim also looks nearly identical to the location of Nibelheim, and is likely different only due to EnglishJapanese syllable transliteration).

Ancient Forest (古の森): An incredibly old forest near Cosmo Canyon. It is only accessible by a Green, Black, or Gold chocobo, or after defeating Ultimate WEAPON for the last time.

Wutai

Nibelheim (ニブルヘイム): Cloud and Tifa's hometown. The Shin-Ra mansion located here was the birthplace of the Jenova Project and, although since abandoned, still contains much of Professor Gast and Hojo's research. Its basement, accessible by a secret passageway, contains the laboratory and research library. Presumably after Gast left the Project, it was used by Hojo to conduct many of his immoral experiments. Vincent Valentine is also discovered here by the party, slumbering in a coffin hidden in a locked room within the basement. The mansion was burned down by Sephiroth after he discovered his origins and went mad. It was subsequently rebuilt and staffed by Shin-Ra to cover up the incident.

Mount Nibel (ニブル山): The mountain overlooking Nibelheim. The site of a Mako Reactor where Jenova was once housed, along with several of Hojo's experiments.

Rocket Town (ロケット村): Cid's hometown. This is the site of the first rocket launch that was loaded with Huge Materia and flown into Meteor.

Wutai (ウータイ): A country occupying a large island off the western-most continent, although the name is primarily used to refer to the only known settlement on the island. Yuffie is the princess of Wutai. Yuffie's father, Godo, led the city in a struggle for dominance against Shin-Ra but lost, and materia was banned in Wutai as a result. When the party first reaches the mountains that must be crossed to reach Wutai, Yuffie steals the party's entire collection of materia and retreats to her hometown, where both she and the Turk Elena are kidnapped by crime boss Don Corneo. Wutai is apparently based upon pre-modern Japan and China, utilizing motifs including a pagoda (where Godo resides) and a large statue of what appears to be Buddha called "Da Chao" and other related figures.

Bone Village (ボーンビレッジ): An excavation site where lost items, including the Lunar Harp, are found.

Sleeping Forest (眠りの森): A forest next to Bone Village. Without the Lunar Harp, the party will wander in the forest aimlessly.

Forgotten Capital (忘らるる都): Sometimes referred to as the "Ancient City" or "Forgotten City". The capital of the Cetra civilization, at one time underwater and exhibiting such unusual structures as homes resembling (or possibly made from) giant helical shells. A shrine exists hidden beneath the city, surrounded by the Lifestream like a small isle. Aerith went to the shrine and attempted to summon Holy using the White Materia. Although successful, she was killed near the altar by Sephiroth.

Icicle Lodge (アイシクルロッジ): Aerith's birthplace. For a time, Professor Gast and Ifalna, an Ancient, lived in the town to hide from Shin-Ra. The town functions as a resort because it snows year-round. The constant cold temperatures are not due to the location of the town, which is somewhat polar, but actually because of the town's proximity to the Northern Crater, where the planet uses a large amount of Mako to try to heal itself. Called "Icicle Inn" in the English version of the game.

Great Glacier (大氷河): A large glacier to the south of Gaea's Cliff. Few people venture that far north, and those who do get lost and pass out in the snow.

Gaea's Cliff (ガイアの絶壁): A huge cliff that leads to the Whirlwind Maze. The explorer Holzoff makes his home at its base and regularly patrols the Great Glacier for travelers who might need aid.

Whirlwind Maze (竜巻の迷宮): A maze of twisty little passages, all alike, that lead to the Northern Crater.

Northern Cave (大空洞): Also called the "Northern Crater". The original impact site of Jenova. The WEAPONs slept under the ice here for thousands of years following their creation. The remaining portion of Sephiroth's body emerged here after traveling through the Lifestream and became encased in a mako cocoon. The crater is also the site of the Jenova Reunion and, later, the final three battles. Its Japanese name, Ookuudou, means "Great Cave".

Other

Materia Caves (マテリア洞窟): Caves scattered around the world where the player can find very rare and variable materia; chocobos are necessary to reach them.

Mideel (ミディール): A hot springs town attacked by Ultima WEAPON, but destroyed by a Lifestream eruption. Cloud appears here after falling into the Lifestream at the Northern Cave.

Temple of the Ancients (古代種の神殿): A large structure into which the Ancients transformed the Black Materia to prevent its use. Whoever wishes to turn the building back into the Black Materia must sacrifice his or her life by solving a series of puzzles that shrinks the temple down back to the size of a materia, thus killing whoever is inside.

Goblin Island (ゴブリンアイランド): An island northeast of Midgar. This is the only place where Goblins appear.

Promised Land (約束の地): A place sought after by the nomadic Cetra - a legacy taken up by Sephiroth, who believes (mistakenly) that he is himself an Ancient. Aerith tells Cloud that the Promised Land may not be a specific place, but Shin-Ra believe otherwise and are intent on using Aerith to find it. Upon reaching the Northern Cave, Rufus and Hojo come to the conclusion that it is the Promised Land, due to its treasure trove of natural Materia. Whether or not the Crater is in fact the Promised Land, or if it even exists in the physical world, is uncertain. There are intimations in the game and Advent Children that the Promised Land may be an actual, as-yet-undiscovered planet.

Cactus Island (サボテンアイランド): A tiny desert island southwest of Mideel. This island does not appear on the radar and is the only place in which Sabotenders (a.k.a. Cactaur) can be encountered in random battles.
