Louis, the Grand Dauphin (le Grand Dauphin in French) (1 November , 1661 - 14 April, 1711) was the eldest son and heir of King Louis XIV of France and Queen consort Maria Theresa of Spain, hence "dauphin".
His paternal grandparents were Louis XIII of France and Anna of Austria. His maternal grandparents were Philip IV of Spain and Elisabeth of France. Elisabeth was a younger sister of Louis XIII.
He was a prestigious French military leader and was instrumental in the War of the Spanish Succession, but died in 1711 (due to natural causes) at the age of fifty, before his father.
He had married Maria Anna of Bavaria; their sons included:
- Louis, Duke of Burgundy (father of Louis XV of France)
- Philip, Duke of Anjou, later Philip V of Spain
- Charles, Duc de Berry, Alençon and Angoulême, also Count of Ponthieu. (b.1686-d.1714)
