15 Squadron RNZAF formed June 1 1942 Whenupai Auckland, under Sqn Ldr A. Crighton. Served in Tonga, Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Santo, Bougainville and Green Island. 15 Squadron returned to new Zealand and was disbanded in November 1945. The squadron was equipped with Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk, and later F4U Corsair fighters. Requipment with the P-51 Mustang was abandoned at cessation of hostilities. No 15 Squadron flew more sorties than any other New Zealand Fighter Squadron in the Pacific theatre.
