North East England is one of the regions of England. The region is also sometimes known by the alternative title, Northumbria. A more detailed look at the history, culture and dialect of the region may be found in the article on Northumbria.

The highest point in the region is The Cheviot, in Northumberland, at 815m.

The region had a referendum on November 4, 2004, rejecting the establishment of an elected regional assembly.

It is divided into the following local government areas:

  1. Northumberland
  2. Newcastle upon Tyne (Tyne and Wear)
  3. Gateshead (Tyne and Wear)
  4. North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear)
  5. South Tyneside (Tyne and Wear)
  6. Sunderland (Tyne and Wear)
  7. County Durham
  8. Darlington (Tees Valley)
  9. Stockton-on-Tees (Tees Valley)
  10. Hartlepool (Tees Valley)
  11. Redcar and Cleveland (Tees Valley)
  12. Middlesbrough (Tees Valley)

The region was originally defined as Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Cleveland. Since then, Tyne and Wear County Council has been abolished, Darlington has seceded from County Durham, and Cleveland was split into four.

The region is now considered to consist of four distinct 'sub-regions': County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, and Tees Valley (former Cleveland plus Darlington).

The region has a rich natural heritage, which includes stretches of coast and extensive upland tracts that are of European nature conservation importance for their habitats and bird-life, and the Magnesian Limestone grasslands of East Durham - a habitat found nowhere else in the world.
