Pedro Chamorro

Pedro Chamorro (September 23, 1924 - January 10, 1978) was the editor of La Prensa, the only powerful opposition paper to the long rule of the Somoza family and husband of Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, the later President of Nicaragua (1990-1996).

While La Prensa was never shut down or completely censored, he was often jailed for its content. In the wake of the Sandinista uprising, his assassination was presumably ordered by Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1978, prompting outrage from many Nicaraguans, 50,000 of whom attended his funeral.
