Silistra

Silistra (also Silistria; Romanian: Silistra or Dârstor) is a port city of northeastern Bulgaria. Population: 42,000 (?); 53,500 (1985); 48,000 (1974); 12,055 (1908); 12,133 (1900); 11,718 (1892). It lies on the southern side of the lower Danube river which until this point forms the country's border with Romania.

Founded as the Roman Durostorum, Silistra was a fortress of great strength, occupying the northeast corner of the famous quadrilateral (Ruse, Silistra, Shumen, Varna), but its fortifications were demolished in accordance with the Treaty of Berlin, 1878. The city was part of Romania between 1913 and 1940.
