Swindon railway station
Categories: Railway stations in the United Kingdom | Swindon | Transport in Wiltshire
Swindon railway station is a railway station serving the town of Swindon in Wiltshire in England.
The station is served by inter-city services from London Paddington to Bristol and South Wales.
Swindon is a major junction, where the old Great Western Railway line to Gloucester and Cheltenham, the Great Western Main Line to Bristol, and the Great Western Railway route to South Wales diverge.
The station consists of an island platform containing a buffet and waiting room. Passengers enter via a building to the south of the line, containing a booking office. They then proceed to the platform via a subway and stairs or lifts.
As part of the regeneration of Swindon town centre, there are plans to construct a second station entrance (and a multi-story carpark) on the North side of the railway line. This will result in the current pedestrian subway being extended. Along with the new entrance, infrastructure will be put in place to accomodate taxis and buses.
