Tenge is the monetary unit of Kazakhstan. Divided in 100 tiyin (or tijn), it was introduced in November 1993 to replace the Russian ruble. ISO-4217-Code: KZT.
The name of the currency is related with the Russian word for money деньги, which was borrowed from Turkic. The word tenge in Kazakh and most other Turkic languages means balance, scales. The origin of the word is Chinese tengse which means balance. The Turkic languages borrowed this word through Mongolian tenkh(e).
The name of this currency is thus similar to those of the lira, pound, and peso.
Coins exist in denominations of 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 tenge. Banknotes exist in denominations of 10000, 5000, 2000, 1000, 500, 200, and 100 tenge.
