Biography
Tifa is introduced as Cloud Strife's childhood friend from the small town of Nibelheim before he left for Midgar as a teenager to train for Shin-Ra's elite military corps SOLDIER five years before the beginning of Final Fantasy VII. Shortly after his departure, Tifa acted as a Nibelheim tour guide for a group of SOLDIER personell inspecting the Mako Reactor in the Nibelheim Mountains. The group consisted of the 1st class officers Sephiroth and Zack, as well as two MPs, one of which, unbeknownst to Tifa, was Cloud.
After the inspection, the group returned to town, and Sephiroth stayed in the basement of the Shin-Ra mansion to read through the research notes left by Hojo. Then, without warning, Nibelheim was set ablaze and most of its citizens were slaughtered by Sephiroth, after he had discovered the story behind the Jenova Project, the history of the Cetra, and the "truth" about humanity. Her hometown in ruins and most of her loved-ones dead, Tifa followed Sephiroth as he returned to the reactor, only to find that her father had been murdered as well. In blind rage, Tifa attempted to stop the elite officer, only to be cut down herself. The events that followed led to Sephiroth's disappearance and Tifa's safe return to Nibelheim by the hands of her martial arts master Zangan.
Soonafter, Tifa left Nibelheim and travelled to the city of Midgar, where she began a bar named "7th Heaven" in its seventh sector, met Barret Wallace, and joined the resistance group AVALANCHE.
Tifa was not merely Cloud's childhood friend; she developed a crush on him while he was away trying and failing to become a first-class member of SOLDIER. Her feelings are manifested through her rigorous care for Cloud throughout the plot, particularly during his bout with Mako poisoning. She does not reveal her feelings to Cloud until the very end of the world looms. She stays with Cloud for one last night when he decides to face Sephiroth alone and lets his friends to go away and decide for themselves if they really want to follow him. Tifa was the only one to stay with Cloud all the time, but in the morning, all of the other characters turn up and together, they make a final stand against Sephiroth.
In On The Way To A Smile
This story, which is a part of On The Way To A Smile is an episode called "Case of Tifa" which is Tifa's story. It describes the events before Advent Children through her eyes tell of what happened between mostly her and Cloud Strife. After Sephiroth is defeated, Tifa, Cloud and Barret move a town just outside of Midgar, called Edge and set up a new Seventh Heaven. Tifa finds relating to Cloud difficult as he spends most of his time travelling for his delivery service.
In Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Tifa went to the Church where Cloud met Aeris in the Slums, and discovers that it is where Cloud has been staying. Loz entered the church, and Tifa fought him to defend Marlene, but was knocked unconscious when Loz took a few cheap shots. When she woke up at home she convinced Cloud to try to save Marlene, Denzel, and the other Geostigma-infected children captured by Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. Later, she and the rest of the original FFVII gang help Cloud defeat Bahamut Sin. They then watch him defeat Sephiroth from Cid's new airship, the Sierra (Shera). Tifa's main role in Advent Children is as a support to Cloud and the caretaker of the afflicted children. She believes that if she, Cloud, Marlene, and Denzel stay together, they can be a makeshift family.
Other Appearances
Tifa is a playable character in the fighting game Ehrgeiz and the electronic board game Itadaki Street Special, and appears in the OVA Last Order: Final Fantasy VII. Last Order shows the events at Nibelheim that Tifa was part of, that were shown as flashbacks in Final Fantasy VII.
Trivia
- Tifa was not originally present in the early drafts of Final Fantasy VII's story. She was created, not to replace Aerith as the lead female character, but because Squaresoft felt that the game needed a female character in the party. Since Yuffie was an optional character, Square created Tifa.
