University of Central Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire is a university based in Preston, Lancashire, with additional campuses in Carlisle and Penrith. The Preston campus has around 35,000 students, making it one of the largest universities in the United Kingdom. Before 1992, it had been Preston Polytechnic since September 1 1973 then Lancashire Polytechnic in 1984. Before then it was Harris College and previously, Harris Institute. Colleges of education were added in the 1970s from Poulton-le-Fylde and Chorley.

On August 1 2004, it took control of the former Northumbria University campus in Carlisle, which had around 400 students.

Today, 'UCLAN', as it is informally known, also validates degree courses for partner institutions such as the art school, Cumbria Institute of the Arts.

Students' Union

The SU publication is called Pluto and varies in format from year to year in an effort to boost its poor circulation and lack of funding. In 2005/6 Pluto is a fortnightly tabloid with a monthly supplement. It was often said that Pluto was as far from the Sun as you can get, this was in the golden age of the publication when it was primarily a newspaper. It now mostly features interviews with the local police and some fashion and film articles. Their radio station is called Frequency 1350, formerly being called Freak-1-C.

The Students' Union underwent a £21 million revamp between 2002 & 2005 and is now a shiny silver colour. Construction was halted halfway through when it was discovered that the shiny metal plating was reflecting into drivers' eyes. The metal coating was then rubbed down to make it less reflective.
