Willis Smith

Willis Smith (19 December 1887 - 26 June 1953) was a Democratic U.S. senator from the state of North Carolina between 1950 and 1953. He won the election to the Senate seat when his assisstant and then current U.S. Senator from North Carolina, Jesse Helms decided to use the idea of race baiting against his opponent, Frank Porter Graham. (Helms later used the idea of race baiting against his African-American opponent by playing on voters fears of affirmative-action in 1990 and 1996.)
