Windward Islands (Society Islands)

The Windward Islands (French: Îles du Vent) are the eastern group of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. The archipelago comprises an administrative division (French: subdivision administrative) of French Polynesia, and includes Tahiti, Moorea, Mehetia, Tetiaroa, and Maiao.

Tahiti and Moorea are high islands. Mehetia, Tetiaroa and Maiao are all coral atolls.

Although French is an important language, the majority of the population speaks Tahitian (co-official with French throughout French Polynesia).

Administratively, the Windward Islands form the administrative subdivion of the Windward Islands (la subdivision adminstrative des Îles du Vent), one of French Polynesia's five administrative subdivisions (subdivision administratives). Geographically, the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands (la subdivision adminstrative des Îles du Vent) is identical with the electoral circumscription of the Windward Islands (circonscription des Îles du Vent), one of French Polynesia's 6 electoral districts/circumscriptions (circonsriptions électorales) for the Assembly of French Polynesia (see also Politics of French Polynesia).
