Wirral is a metropolitan borough in Merseyside, North West England, which occupies part of the Wirral peninsula, more commonly known locally as The Wirral.

Wirral Metropolitan Borough has a population of about 312,000 in an area of 60 square miles (155 km²). It faces Liverpool over the River Mersey to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and the River Dee to the west. Major towns and villages in the borough include Birkenhead, New Brighton, Wallasey, Bidston and West Kirby.

Wirral retains a selective education system, and has a number of highly-regarded grammar and independent schools including Calday Grange Grammar School, Wirral Grammar School for boys and girls, West Kirby Grammar School and Birkenhead School.

Famous people from the area include Ian Botham and 007 actor Daniel Craig.

Wirral Metropolitan Borough forms the most north-westerly part of the traditional county of Cheshire, and was once a hundred.
